Became the first player to win both the WGC-Accenture Match Play and the World Match Play Championship when he beat Luke Donald in the final of the latter at Finca Cortesin in Spain in May 2011. Just over a year earlier he beat Paul Casey to become the first English winner of the WGC-Accenture World Match Play, during a season which was arguably the finest of his career. It started with a runner-up finish at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, then he was in contention in the Masters Tournament but had to settle for tied tenth, before he made a huge contribution to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the USA, winning three points from four at The Celtic Manor Resort. That continued his fine Ryder Cup record, having been the leading points scorer with four from five at Valhalla in 2008 after being selected as a wild card pick. Ended 2010 in the same vein, winning the UBS Hong Kong Open a week after he finished tied sixth in his defence of the Barclays Singapore Open title. Nearly notched his 11th European Tour victory at the season-ending Dubai World Championship presented by DP World but lost in a play-off with Robert Karlsson. However, second spot was enough to finish a career-high fourth in The Race to Dubai. Also broke into the world’s top five for the first time during 2010 and ended the season eighth in the Official World Golf Ranking. Renown for having a passion for fashion and flair, he launched his own clothing range in 2007, the same year he married his long-time fiancée Katie. Took up the game at the age of four when dad, Terry, a single figure handicapper, gave him a cut-down three wood. Won The Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 2000 and four years later made a successful Ryder Cup debut as part of Bernhard Langer’s victorious European Team. Is an avid supporter of Arsenal FC and travelled to the Champions League Final on the Wednesday night of the 2006 Irish Open, chartering a plane which got him there and back in time for his 7.50am tee time on the Thursday morning.
